THE DARKSCALE STORY
Years ago, when we first introduced our 9" Serrated Fillet Knife, it quickly earned its place in the SORD lineup. For 3 years now, yellowfin tuna fishermen out of Venice, Louisiana have been putting it to work on some of the toughest fish in the Gulf. The aggressive serrations have proven to power through scales and skin that would almost stop a traditional straight blade in its tracks.
But over time, we started hearing the same request again and again.
"Can you pleaseeee make a shorter version too?"
It wasn’t coming from people who didn’t like the 9". It was coming from fishermen who loved it, but wanted the same cutting power in a blade that offered more precision on smaller fish, not just jumbo tunas.
The kind of angler asking that question is usually working a wider variety of fish. Some big, some small. Sometimes you’re chunking bait on the boat. Sometimes you’re cleaning sheepshead and triggerfish with armor-plated scales. Sometimes you're working tight cuts around collars, pin bones, and rib cages where the tip of the knife needs to go exactly where you tell it.
And in those moments, a little less blade length means a lot more control.
DIALING IN THE 6" SERRATED BLADE
So we took the core concept of the 9" Serrated blade and shrunk it down into a 6" blade length designed for control.
The goal wasn’t to reinvent the knife, it was to give anglers a version that felt more precise in hand, and honestly, safer too. By shortening the blade, you gain far more command over the tip, especially when making initial penetrating cuts or sawing though bones.
Species like sheepshead, triggerfish, and redfish are famous for their tough scales and stubborn skin. A straight blade often slides across them a few times before it bites. Serrations change that entirely. They grab, punch, and eat through scales with authority.
The result is a knife that feels aggressive when you need power, but precise when you need to tone it back.
Just like every SORD, it wasn’t something we finalized at a desk. It was prototyped back in 2021, and went to work on real fish here in our home waters of Destin, FL and over in Dauphin Island, AL.
Once it proved itself in those environments, we knew the blade had earned its place.
THE "WILD CHILD" NAME
Around the SORD HQ, the nickname caught on pretty quickly.
If the 9" serrated blade is the seasoned older brother, the 6" serrated quickly became known as The Wild Child.
Shorter. A little rowdier. Pretty fun to bring to a party.
It carries the same DNA as the 9", but it’s more controllable in the hand and far more versatile for the variety of fish most anglers bring home.
BUILDING THE DARKSCALE LOOK
Since this knife was designed specifically to handle scaly species, we wanted the handle to reflect exactly that.
So we built a red and black fish-scale patterned G10 handle that mirrors the kind of fish this blade was meant to dominate. The layered G10 construction gives the handle depth and durability, while the textured pattern keeps the grip locked in, especially when things get slick at the cleaning table.
The result was something that looked aggressive, bold, and right at home hanging out on a bloody Killerdock.
Once we saw the finished handle paired with the blade, the name came naturally.
Darkscale.
A CORE KNIFE THAT NEEDED A PROPER ENTRANCE
Because of the number of requests for a shorter serrated option, this knife will eventually join the core SORD fillet knife lineup later in 2026.
But we didn’t want to quietly add it to the lineup without giving it a proper entrance first.
So the first round is dropping as the Limited "Darkscale" Edition, featuring the red and black scale-patterned handle that gave the knife its name.
It’s the introduction of what we believe will become a staple blade for anglers across the country, especially those dealing with stubborn, scaly species.
From our experience, come dinner time, those scaly swimmers are well worth the work at the cleaning table.
The Wild Child of the SORD lineup is here. And it's ready to work as hard as you do.
